Match Report - Sheffield FC vs Dunston UTS FC

Reporter: Dom Bingham

Dunston started brilliantly, going 1-0 up just 8 minutes in with Jake Stafford guiding the ball home from a Jack Elliott cross following superb work down the left. They then had a succession of chances to make it 2-0. Thear had a ferocious shot blocked following a knock down, and then Stafford had his shot saved by keeper Jonathan Hedge. Dunston were in control of the match, Thear and Elliott both having mazy runs into the Sheffield box causing havoc for the defence, but they managed to scramble the ball away on both occasions to make sure they went into the break just the one goal down.

However, Dunston rued these missed chances in the second half. Just five minutes in, a long ball forward by the Sheffield backline was flicked on by striker Marc Newsham, which then fell to Charlie Reaney to stab home and level the game.

This early goal galvanised the home side, and Luke Hall had the chance to put his side ahead, but could only hit the side netting with his shot whilst one on one. Connell then made a good save from Hall as Sheffield grew in confidence.

With a draw looking likely, Sheffield found a winner in the dying minutes. A long ball over the Dunston defence was latched onto by Newsham who kept his composure to beat Michael Hall for pace to score and send his side on their way to a huge three points and just their second win of the season. Dunston threw everyone forward in the dying stages, but couldn’t break down the resolute Sheffield defence.

Dunston will look to bounce back next Saturday when Northern Premier League side Bamber Bridge visit in the 3rd qualifying round of the Buildbase FA Trophy.
