REPORT | Dunston UTS 2 Consett AFC 2

A free-kick stunner from Rory Edwards and an excellent header by David Robinson weren’t enough for three points in a frustrating afternoon for Dunston.

Jon McDonald made three changes to the side that defeated Grimsby Borough last Saturday with Dan Lowson, Tom Devitt and Rory Edwards replacing Tyler Jones, Jack Walker and Sado Djalo.

Dunston began the game the brightest when Harvey Neary flashed his shot wide of Moss’s goal. However, the referee brought play back to a foul on Wil Shaw on the edge of the box. Rory Edwards stepped up and placed his effort into the top-left corner to give Dunston an early lead on six minutes.

Just seven minutes later, Consett’s Isaac Walker found space inside the area and equalised as his effort trickled past Lowson. Walker could have put Consett ahead two minutes later however his effort was well-saved by Dan Lowson.

Walker was again causing the Dunston defence problems this time putting the ball in the back of the net again however the linesman’s flag quickly halted celebrations. Just ten minutes later, Jude Swailes made a vital block to stop Walker from grabbing his second of the game.

Just before the break, Edwards then showed off his defensive work this time denying Marc Costello a clear goal with a vital interception to see the scores level going into half-time.

The second-half began slow for both teams with a tame effort from Shaw on 53 minutes the only highlight inside the opening twenty minutes of the second half. Turner & Shaw both had chances on minute 70 and 71 but their efforts didn’t cause the Consett goal much trouble.

The second goal of the game finally came following good work down the right-hand side from Neary as he delivered an excellent cross for substitute David Robinson to head home. The Consett equaliser came four minutes later however, following a ricochet inside the Dunston area, the ball fell to Ben Ramsey who squeezed his effort inside Lowson’s near post to draw Consett level again.

Heading into the final ten minutes of the game, Dunston pushed for a winner. Jude Swailes saw his effort saved by Moss before the ball ended up in the back of the net however it was ruled out for a foul on Moss. Dean Briggs’s free-kick was the final chance of the game but his effort landed straight at Moss to cap off a disappointing afternoon for Dunston.

Next up for Dunston is a home game in the Pitching in Nothern Premier East against Newton Aycliffe this Tuesday.
