Match Preview | Ashington (H)
Dunston look to continue their perfect start to the season tomorrow evening, welcoming Ashington to the UTS Stadium (7:45pm kick-off).
Recent Meetings
The Blues have faced The Colliers several times across the past twenty years, in both the Northern Premier League & the Northern League.
In the 2024/25 season, Dunston did the double over tomorrow’s visitors. A bank holiday meeting at the UTS Stadium ended 2-0, with goals from Sado Djalo & Dale Pearson giving Jon McDonald’s side all three points. In the reverse fixture, Djalo was on the scoresheet again, with Dunston ending 2024 with a convincing 1-0 win at Woodhorn Lane.
Recent Form
It’s been the perfect start to the 2025/26 for Dunston. With two clean sheets and two comfortable wins in league action against North Ferriby (1-0) & Blyth Town (2-0), the Blues continued their perfect start on Saturday as Liam Thear’s last-minute winner sent his side into the next round of the Emirates FA Cup, beating Thornaby 2-1.
Nicky Gray’s side have had a tough start to the season. They were knocked out the FA Cup in the Extra Preliminary by Northern League side Shildon to open their season, before losing 2-0 to Bridlington Town to start their league campaign. Most recently, Harry Powell scored a 92nd minute equaliser to earn Ashington a point at home to Bishop Auckland.
One to watch
Josh Gilchrist – Gilchrist was one of Dunston’s first signings of the 2024/25 season, making fifteen appearances and scoring once. The former Newcastle United academy prospect then headed to Woodhorn Lane on the back of his spell with the Blues, scoring 16 times in 31 games. He picked up Ashington’s Manager’s Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season & Goal of the Season to wrap up an excellent first year in black & white.
Jon McDonald’s pre-match thoughts
“It’ll not be an easy game. Nick [Gray] will have his lads ready”.
“They didn’t play on Saturday so will have had more time to recover than us”.
“We’re at home. It’s another game against a local side and I really look forward to all those games”.
