Dunston UTS FC vs Worksop Town - Match report
The visitors had the first big chance when Ben Tomlinson was put through on goal after a long ball from the defence, however his shot was saved low by Liam Connell. Minutes later, Worksop would rue that miss as a poor goal kick from Daniel Moore was capitalised on by Michael Pearson, heading the ball through the defence to Michael Fowler who was able loft the ball into the net from 25 yards out with Moore back peddling.
There were then huge shouts for a penalty, Fowler going down in the box having been grappled to the floor, only for the referee to wave away the protests.
Despite being infuriated by the previous decision, Dunston didn’t need to wait long for another opportunity and doubled their advantage when a long ball forward was brought down brilliantly by Luke Porritt. The winger charged into the box, laid it across for the fox in the box Fowler who smashed home for 2-0 from six yards out. Liam Connell was called into action to preserve the two-goal buffer as he tipped over from a Cody Cormack shot before Richard Coulson skewed a shotwide just before the break after a delightful through ball from Craig Baxter.
Dunston continued to up the pressure after the break, with Fowler able to complete his deserved hat trick early in the second half. A Craig Baxter cross wasn’t dealt with by the away defence, allowing the striker to walk the ball unchallenged with the defence at sixes and sevens.
Ursene Mouanda was close to adding a fourth when he had a shot go just wide, as Dunston pushed on. Worksop searched for a route back into the game, with Lewis Gibbens sending a header wide and Steven Mcdonnell curling a free kick past the post. However, Dunston stood firm with the defence looking assured and composed, and dealing with everything thrown at them. Fowler nearly had his fourth of the day when he ran onto Stafford’s through ball, but Moore was able to tip his shot over.
Deep into added time Dunston UTS added a fourth as Phil Turnbull curled in a sublime free kick across goal into the top corner with Moore unable to do anything this time to stop it.
A superb team performance from Dunston who will look to build on their fine start to 2022 next weekend at Yorkshire Amateurs FC.
