Dunston travelled back to Washington to play their first away game in the EBAC Northern League Div 1 and looking to continue their positive start to the season after their home victory against Consett last Saturday. Dunston have injuries to Adam Rundle and Mark Fitzpatrick, whose places were taken by Steven Anderson and Scott Heslop. Washington had a fairly similar team that were beaten 3-0 by Dunston in the FA cup except for player Manger, and former Dunston player Michael Laws who was suspended.

Washington:  Gladstone, Parker, Brown, White, Evans, Gardener, Edwards (Sands 80), Williamson (Pilatos 45), Pickard, Shaw (Whitehouse 67), Jewson Subs Not Used: Dent, Wood.

Dunston UTS: Grant, Elliott, Halliday, Pearson, Carl Jones, Michael Hall, Thear L (Drane 81), Burrell, Heslop, Stafford, Anderson. Subs not used: Harrison, Thear K, Fitzpatrick, Swailes.

Dunston started confidently and almost opened the scoring inside 1 minute as Heslop tried a shot from 18 yards out that was saved by Gladstone. On 4, Jewson snatched at a shot from 30 yards out and the ball went wide of the target. Immediately Dunston replied again with a Heslop shot, which bounced back off the diving keeper who recovered to collect the ball. On 10 Burrell placed a 30-yard free kick over the bar. After 16, Liam Thear, collected from Anderson 12 yards out and his jink created space for him to slot past Gladstone and into the net for 1-0 to Dunston.

On 20, Stafford had a shot from 1o yards deflected for a corner. After 31 minutes, Stafford was on hand, 2 yards out of goal, as a Pearson corner kick had been deflected onto the cross bar, to head home Dunston’s second goal. Dunston remained in charge of the game up to half time and created chances for Heslop whose free kick was deflected wide and again as Anderson fed Heslop whose shot from 15 yards went over the bar, Washington’s only reply was a 35-yard shot by Jewson that was collected comfortably by Grant.

Washington came out slightly reorganised for the second half after Palatos came on for Shaw at half time, but it was Dunston, in the form of Pearson, who got the first chance as he turned on the edge of the area and shot just wide of the upright. On 55, Elliott received from a miskicked Gladstone clearance from outside his area, Elliot tried a 50 yard

shot which a fortunate Gladstone was glad to collect. The game became more even with both defences holding their own and denying opportunities. The brighter chances came from Burrell who fired just over from 25-yards out. On 62, Washington pushed Dunston on the back foot but were unable to get a clear chance on goal. On 65, a Pearson corner flew across the face of the Washington goal but no one was able to apply the killer touch.

Full Time score Washington 0 Dunston 2

Dunston’s Man of the Match: Michael Pearson who was all over the pitch supporting defence and attackers. Scott

Heslop and Liam Thear were constantly threatening especially in the first half while Burrell and Stafford were willing

hands all through the game.
