Dunston travelled down the Tyne to The Darren Persson Stadium, to play North Shields in a game that pitted two recent FA Vase winners in the Ebac Northern League First Division. Dunston were looking to extend a recent winning run against one of the favourites to end up as League champions. The Shields line-up included 3 former Dunston players in Gary Ormston, Dan Wilson and James Luccock. Dunston named an unchanged team from the one that won last time out at Guisborough that included new signing Ben Pollock at centre-half. This game was also Michael Pearson's final game before he embarks on an extended holiday in which he plans to tour the world and other places !

v North Shields

Dunston were fastest out of the blocks and could have been ahead after just 30 seconds as Liam Thear had a shot from 7-yards tipped over the bar after a fast flowing move involving Michael Pearson, Mark Fitzpatrick and Scott Heslop. From the resulting corner Pearson's header went just wide of the post. Shields replied on 4 minutes as Ben Pollock had to deflect a cross with his head for a corner. The resulting corner found Shields skipper Kevin Hughes at the back post but Aidan Grant was able to save his tame shot comfortably. On 11 minutes Mark Fitzpatrick put in a great cross for a point-blank Michael Pearson header which was prevented from going in by an alert Kyle Hayes in the Shields goal.

On 19 minutes a Callum Elliott cross was met by Scott Heslop but his effort went wide of the post. Dunston did not have to wait long for their opening goal which came in the 20th minute when Michael Pearson played a ball into Mark Fitzpatrick who turned in the box and volleyed an unstoppable right-foot shot into the roof of the net from 10 yards past a helpless Kyle Hayes. 1 - 0 to Dunston.

Shields tried to respond and on 22 minutes Dean Holmes had a 20-yard shot deflected for a corner. On 26 minutes Liam Thear fired in a rocket shot which rebounded off Hayes before Pearson fired in a 22-yard shot which went wide of the upright. On 28 minutes Jake Stafford went on a run into the Shields area but his low shot-cum-cross was intercepted and cleared. On 30 minutes former Dunston player James Luccock fired a shot across Grant’s goal and wide of the far post.

On 34 minutes Dean Holmes was fed into the centre of the box but he tried to lob the ball over the giant frame of Grant who saved comfortably. On 35 minutes Fitzpatrick, on the right wing, drove a low ball right across the Shields goal without any Dunston player being able to connect. Two minutes later, Liam Thear fed a good through ball into Mark Fitzpatrick who turned in the box and poked the ball past a surprised Hayes. 2 - 0 to Dunston.

v North Shields

At this stage Dunston were rampant and on 42 minutes Fitzpatrick tried a 20-yard shot which Hayes saved low down at his front post. Fitzpatrick was looking for his hat-trick and as the game approached the end of the first-half he got another chance as Thear played a long ball in his direction. Although it looked like Kevin Hughes had the situation covered, the ball went over him and Fitzpatrick ran on chipped a perfect finish over the advancing Hayes and into the centre of the goal. 3 – 0.

Shields came out in the second-half fresh from a stern talking to by their manager Brian Smith and Dunston had to weather the early onslaught and some strong forward runs by Dean Holmes. On 54 minutes Dunston’s Michael Hall was harshly adjudged to have fouled Holmes 8 yards from the corner flag on the left and when Lee Mason delivered a good free-kick, former Dunston player Gary Ormston rose and turned his header into the Dunston net. 3 - 1 to Dunston.

.

The goal gave the home side a boost and they put in some sustained attacking in an effort to grab another counter. Dunston defended resulotely and were relying on the forward running of Mark Fitzpatrick who was holding the ball up to allow midfielders to get up and join him. On 66 minutes Lee Mason for Shields fired a shot from 25-yards over the bar as two defenders collided while trying to clear. After weathering the storm, it was Dunston who had the better opportunities to score. On 71 minutes Liam Thear turned in the box and beat his man before crashing an 8-yard shot which Hayes superbly blocked at his near post.

.

Then young striker James Martin got a clear opportunity close-in after great work by Fitzpatrick on the right side of the box but he scuffed his effort and the chance was gone. Dunston continued to repel the Shields attacks with determined defending up until the final whistle which included 4 minutes of added time.
